Hiring without the hassle

Going through a recruitment process can often be a headache! In our experience, this is usually because of unclear processes or too many steps.

Remember that the candidates are evaluating you too! Not all organisations can afford, or need, an ‘all singing all dancing’ system to help manage their recruitment process so here are some tips to follow:

1. Be clear from the start on what you really need

  • Avoid vague job descriptions. This shouldn’t be a list of all their tasks; it should note typically no more than 8 accountabilities the job needs to deliver – what they are doing, to what and with what outcome. Example for a receptionist – To answer all calls (the what) in a quick, polite and efficient manner (the how) to ensure all customers receive a first class service (the outcome)

  • Tell them how they will be measured. Things that can truly be measured. Example – visitor satisfaction, call wait time, visitor wait time, no customer complaints.

2. Screen efficiently

  • Use person specifications to sift the applications – what is essential vs desirable? And try not to settle for ‘the best of a bad bunch’!  If we could get £1 for every time we’ve heard that when we are having a discussion about failing probation, we would be rich😊

3. Streamline communication

  • Use email templates for consistent, fast replies.

  • Be transparent with candidates: where they are in the process, next steps, timelines.

4. Don’t overthink it

  • Perfect hires are rare. Focus on what matters for that role, whether it be potential, values fit or problem-solving ability.
