Top tips for an effective appraisal process
Whether you do regular reviews or annual appraisals, here are some tips for putting an effective process in place:
· Don’t let it be a ‘tick box’ exercise – review your process and make sure it fits with your organisation’s culture;
· Agree what your team members are accountable for and ensure they take ownership of these accountabilities - both manager and employee have a part to play to add value;
· Set realistic objectives/KPIs – your employee doesn’t want to fail and you don’t want to spend time having to carry out performance improvement plans;
· Be realistic when agreeing their aspirations and future development – don’t promise the moon and the stars if it is not possible;
· Manging poor performance should not be part of the appraisal process – nothing should be a shock at the appraisal so if the person is under-performing, address it at the time.
If you do not have an appraisal process in situ, we can help you design one and roll it out with your employees. When we have helped clients with this in the past, the benefits are evident as their employees were more engaged by:
· knowing the clear expectations from the business
· creating a plan for professional growth/career development
· highlighting their training needs and where possible, the company agreeing to support this learning and development
When employees can see how their actions affect the company overall, they are more likely to perform better. If you would like any help,
