Top tips for increasing performance

The start of any new year is always a good time for renewed focus and energy and whether you are managing your people in person or from home, or a combination of both, your approach to managing your people’s performance should be the same. Here are some top tips for increasing employee performance in 2024:

Give clarity and direction

In the best of times and worst of times, always provide a clear direction, clear roles and responsibilities, clear objectives, etc. People will talk no matter what, and when they don’t know, they often speculate or become indifferent and disengage. They can feel like they do not matter or have no control.

Give regular feedback and deal with under-performers

Give regular positive and constructive feedback, they need to know to ‘repeat the same’ of the good stuff and where they are going wrong, on the not-so-good.  So don’t be tempted to duck this as nothing will kill a great employee faster than watching you tolerate a bad one.

Develop Your Team

Employees are more likely to stay when they feel like they are developing, so provide on-the-job training and coaching. By going the extra mile and investing in your people personally as well, an employer can improve results and create a better environment for success.

Keep connected

Some of us are working from home, some in the workplace part-time – whatever your arrangements are, it is good to keep the team engaged and enable them to see and interact with their colleagues. Whether that be regular Teams meetings, meeting occasionally face-to-face, arranging virtual ‘company events’ – we all remember the Zoom quizzes from the way back at start of the pandemic – whatever suits your business and your teams’ dynamics.
