Building Self-Esteem at Work

We can all have those days when we are just ‘not feeling it’ and for whatever reason, we don’t feel good about ourselves.

But when low self-esteem becomes a long-term problem, it can have a harmful effect on our mental health and our day-to-day lives, which in turn impacts our work.

HOW CAN managers help BOOST the SELF-ESTEEM of one of their team?

Boosting self-esteem is a personal journey, but there are several strategies that managers can use to support their team member. In our experience of coaching managers through these issues, we would like to share some approaches you might find useful:

  1. Focus on their Strengths: Remind them of their positive qualities and skills, what they like about themselves or what they’ve accomplished, no matter how small it may seem.

  2. Set Realistic Goals: Break down big tasks into smaller, manageable ones. Achieving small goals can build confidence and give them a sense of accomplishment.

  3. Take Care of Your Body: Managers can’t insist their team members exercises, eats well, and gets enough sleep, but remind them that physical well-being has a big impact on emotional health.

  4. Learn to Accept Compliments: Give them compliments when they have done a good job – they may try to brush it off, so speak to them about trying to accept it graciously.

  5. Celebrate Progress, Not Perfection: Striving for improvement is great, but perfection is impossible. Celebrate their efforts, growth, and the progress they’ve made rather than fixating on what isn't perfect.

Small, consistent changes can lead to big improvements over time. Ignoring someone living with low self-esteem can harm their mental health and possibly lead to problems such as anxiety and depression; supporting them whilst they are struggling with this can have lots of positive effects for them, your team and the wider business.
