Are employee surveys useful?
Did you know that only 10% of U.K. workers were found to be feeling engaged with their jobs, according to Gallup’s State of the Global Workforce 2024 report, with the UK trailing behind the U.S. and several European countries.
Can you ‘hand on heart’ say you know what your employees think about working for your company? Some might say you need to be a ‘brave soul’ to ask direct questions if you want to hear their responses but we believe it is the best way to gauge a temperature check on how people feel, even if it means having to take any negative or derogatory remarks on the chin.
WHY SURVEYS ARE USEFUL
Whilst employee surveys are only a snapshot it time because how we feel today may be different to how we feel tomorrow, they can provide constructive feedback on how to retain, develop and engage your staff.
In our experience, one of the most common questions asked in a survey is ‘Would you recommend us to your family and friends?’ and their responses tell us a lot about how they feel about your company, because let’s face it, if they aren’t happy, they aren’t going to suggest their friends and family work for you.
So, what can you get out of a survey:
Giving your people a voice – not everyone is confident enough to speak up in team meetings however surveys are anonymised and people become brave!
Quick fixes – things that don’t cost money, just a bit of your time (and you can say ‘you spoke and we listened’)
Ideas for future business plans – we have supported clients with many staff surveys and the suggestions from staff on improvements they would like is usually quite long. We recommend drafting a plan of things you can fix but will cost money and will take time but more importantly communicating this to your employees so they know you are taking them seriously and have plans in place
Positive stats – survey results aren’t usually all doom and gloom; show where you are getting it right so can encourage more of the same
We can help with all aspects of employee engagement from designing and delivering a bespoke employee survey to recommendations on how to act upon the findings. We have helped many organisations with this, with very positive outcomes.
