Reclaiming Narratives – Black History Month

October is Black History Month in the UK. This year’s theme is ‘Reclaiming Narratives’ which focuses on empowering Black individuals and communities to take control of their own stories, histories and experiences.
As part of our ongoing efforts strengthening our Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (‘EDI’) strategy at P2HR, this month we are supporting and celebrating the contributions of those with African and Caribbean heritage to Bristol and Britain and to foster an understanding of Black history in general.
What can I do?
Breaking down stereotypes and prejudice, while understanding your employees' backgrounds, their journeys, and what motivates them to succeed, not only demonstrates deeper empathy and insight, but also strengthens working relationships and bonds. This approach enriches your organisation's culture by fostering education and awareness.
Recently we successfully completed our ‘Race Aware’ certification, which was led by the fantastic Bianca Jones of EDP Training (www.edptraining.co.uk) and have continued our allyship in advocating anti racism in the workplace and beyond.

Where do we start?
Implement and review your EDI Policy on a regular basis
Dismantle the personal bias - be mindful and conscious about your actions
Lead with Inclusion and be an inclusive leader – Implement learning programs and be curious
Listen to minority voices – seek out and ACT upon feedback from minority employees
Year-round support – Celebrate diversity throughout the year, not just during designated months

During Black History Month, listen, learn and amplify Black voices. Educate yourself about Black history, celebrate Black achievements and engage in meaningful conversations. Support and advocate for racial justice and challenge inequality. Allyship is about consistent action, not just for a month.
