HR Audit - Case study

Can you be fined for the lack of some HR practices?  Yes – and ignorance is not a defence! At P2HR, we pride ourselves on delivering thorough and insightful HR audits that help organisations enhance their compliance, efficiency, and overall HR function. Recently, we conducted a comprehensive HR audit which not only identified critical areas for improvement but also highlighted best practices that can benefit organisations of all sizes.

The Context

The organisation approached P2HR following concerns about their HR compliance, and they needed assurance that their HR processes met legal and regulatory standards.

Key Findings

Our audit revealed several areas requiring attention:

  • Right-to-Work (RTW) Checks: Inconsistencies in documentation and verification processes posed a potential legal risk. And more importantly, the company can be fined for this!

  • Record-Keeping: Some employee records were incomplete or not stored in line with best practices, raising GDPR and data security concerns.

  • Policies and Procedures: While the organisation had fundamental HR policies in place, some lacked clarity or had not been updated to reflect recent legislative changes.

  • Training and Development: There was a need for improved HR knowledge among line managers to ensure compliance with employment regulations.

Recommendations and Action Plan

Following the audit, we provided a tailored action plan to address these challenges. We all know Rome was not built in a day and HR practices take time to implement and embed.  To this end, our action plan incorporated a traffic light system to indicate to the client which actions required attention first.

The Impact

By addressing these areas, the organisation has taken proactive steps to mitigate risk and strengthen its HR function. Implementing structured processes and upskilling their team will contribute to long-term operational efficiency and legal compliance.

Takeaways for Other Organisations

This audit serves as a reminder that regular HR reviews are essential to maintaining compliance and fostering a strong workplace culture. Organisations of all sizes can benefit from:

  • Periodic HR audits to identify potential risks and inefficiencies.

  • Ensuring all employees have completed RTW checks in accordance with UK legislation.

  • Keeping HR policies and records up to date to avoid compliance issues.

  • Investing in training for managers to enhance HR capabilities across the organisation.

At P2HR, we are committed to supporting organisations with practical, strategic HR solutions. If you are unsure about your compliance status or want to optimise your HR processes, get in touch with us today.
