Pancakes & People: Flipping Fun in the Workplace!

Over the years, We’ve seen (and taken part in) many an office pancake-flipping contest. And let’s be honest—while the goal was always to raise money for charity, the real takeaway was the uncontrollable laughter, questionable flipping techniques, and the occasional pancake stuck to the ceiling. (Don’t ask. Just know that Health & Safety eventually put an end to the camping stove era. 😅)

Shrove Tuesday, or Pancake Day as most of us call it, is the perfect excuse for a little workplace fun. But as HR professionals and business leaders, we’re always balancing enjoyment with employee well-being. So, how can we celebrate this delicious day without the sugar crash? Let’s talk toppings, portion control, and healthier swaps—because a happy, healthy team is the real winner here!

Sweet or Savoury? The Great Pancake Debate

Some of us are die-hard lemon-and-sugar fans, while others prefer to go rogue with cheese and spinach. Either way, here are a few HR-approved ways to keep the fun (and energy levels) up:

Toppings That Won’t Cause an Afternoon Slump

The Classic (but Smarter) Choice: Swap out heaps of syrup for fresh fruit, Greek yogurt, or a drizzle of honey. Your team’s productivity will thank you.
Nutty for Nutrition: A handful of nuts or seeds adds crunch and keeps the energy levels steady—no sugar rollercoaster here!
Chocolate Lovers Unite! Dark chocolate spread (in moderation) = happy employees and a few antioxidants, too.

Pancake Portion Control (Because HR Loves Balance)

Look, we get it—pancakes are meant to be enjoyed! But just like with work-life balance, a little moderation goes a long way. Encourage your team to enjoy their treats while also fueling their day with protein, whole grains, and a few veggies. (Spinach in pancakes? It’s a thing, we promise.)

Healthier Pancakes? Yes, They Exist!

If you’re looking for ways to make your Pancake Day more inclusive and nutritious:
✔ Try gluten-free or high-protein flours like almond or coconut flour.
✔ Add in chia seeds, flaxseeds, or even mashed banana for extra goodness.
✔ Make savoury pancakes with cheese, eggs, and veggies for a more balanced option.

Mindful Eating: Because Pancakes Deserve to Be Savoured

Encourage your team to slow down and enjoy the moment—whether it’s flipping pancakes in the breakroom or simply appreciating the taste and texture of their food. Mindful eating isn’t just good for digestion; it’s a great way to de-stress!

Oh, and if your office is hosting a pancake-flipping competition, my best advice? Always choose the lightest pan. 😉
