National Hug Day!
Hugs are amazing—they’re warm, comforting, and even scientifically proven to be good for your health! A good hug can release feel-good hormones like oxytocin, reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and even boost your immune system. Who wouldn’t want all those benefits wrapped up in a snuggly embrace?
While it’s a positive initiative, when it comes to hugging in the workplace, it’s worth pausing before you dive in for that bear hug. Here’s why:
Hugging at Work: Yay or Nay?
While hugs can be lovely, workplace etiquette requires extra care. Why? Because not everyone may welcome a hug, and sometimes what feels friendly to one person might feel invasive to another. The law takes unwanted physical contact seriously. If someone feels uncomfortable, pressured, or worried that saying “no” could impact their job, it’s a violation of their rights. Sexual harassment training can highlight the importance of respecting personal boundaries in the workplace, ensuring employees feel safe and respected.
And let’s be honest, none of us wants to turn National Hug Day into Awkward Encounter Day or, worse, a legal complaint.
Play It Safe (and Fun!)
To keep things celebratory without crossing boundaries, here are some creative ways to spread the good vibes:
Say It with Words: A heartfelt “thank you” or “great job!” goes a long way.
Public Praise: Give a shoutout at a meeting or in an email.
Acts of Kindness: Surprise someone with a coffee, treat, or thoughtful note.
Smile and High-Five: Non-contact, but still super uplifting.
Office Hug Alternatives: Try an air hug, a cheerful wave, or even the good ol’ thumbs-up.
Encourage employees to communicate their boundaries clearly and professionally. Not everyone feels comfortable with physical gestures due to cultural, personal or religious reasons. Training can foster understanding and respect for these differences.
The Golden Rule
If you do want to give a hug, always, always ask first—and be 100% sure the other person is okay with it. And if someone declines, respect their choice without question.
Let’s make National Hug Day about connection, kindness, and a positive atmosphere—no awkwardness required!
In professional settings, power dynamics can make gestures of affection more complex, potentially creating unintentional pressure for employees to engage in unwelcome behavior. Sexual harassment training can help address these challenges by fostering awareness and promoting respectful workplace interactions.
This is also a great opportunity to remind employees about your organisation’s code of conduct and policies on appropriate workplace behavior.
