Time to talk…
As we all know, raising awareness for anything in life (from cancer to stroke symptoms to mental health) is a really good way to get people talking. Time to Talk Day shines the light on starting those conversations around mental health.
MENTAL HEALTH
In our roles at P2HR, we are often asked by clients how to have conversations about mental health. Most managers do not want to offend or they are scared of getting it wrong so they either steer clear of the subject altogether or skirt around the issue without asking the direct questions around mental health.
The key thing, in our opinion, is that there is no ‘right or wrong’ way to start the conversation about mental health – the crucial part is just to start talking about it, whether that be whilst you are sat side by side working, have gone for a walk together or during their 121 (but don’t be put off waiting for the ‘ideal’ time). Your employee may very well be desperate to talk to you but doesn’t know how to broach the subject or they may not want to talk about it at all, but unless you ask the questions, how are you going to know how to support them? It is perfectly okay if they are not ready to discuss their mental health with you, however you have let them know you are there if they want to talk.
Keep it simple, ask direct questions and more importantly, listen to what they have to say. Here are 3 tips for questions to ask:
1. How are you? Now this seems like a simple question, but the clue is in the answer and if they for example say ‘I’m fine’ and you don’t believe they are, ask again.
2. What does it make you feel like? It’s important for you to understand them as an individual and how their particular circumstances are affecting them
3. Can we do anything to support you? Everyone’s need for support will look different and is applicable to them so understanding what their needs are helps you devise a plan of how you can support them through their mental health.
