Onboarding for success!

When you’ve finally found the right person for the job, it’s tempting to breathe a sigh of relief and let them hit the ground running.

But onboarding is more than a welcome email and a few forms. Done well, it can build confidence, strengthen loyalty, and set your new hire up to succeed long after the first few weeks.

Here’s how to create a simple but powerful onboarding process that supports your people — and your business — for the long haul:

1. Start before day one

Send a friendly welcome message, confirm key details, and share what to expect on their first day. This reduces first-day nerves and shows you’re organised and ready for them.

2. Map out the first month

A clear schedule helps new hires settle in. Include time for training, meeting key people, shadowing, and understanding your values and mission — not just tasks.

3. Assign a buddy or peer guide

Someone who can answer the “little” questions can make a big difference. A buddy helps break down silos and gives new employees a friendly, informal support line.

4. Check in (more than once)

Don’t wait until probation to ask how it’s going. Schedule regular 1:1s in the early weeks to talk about wins, worries, and what support they need.

5. Review and refine

Ask your recent joiners for feedback on their onboarding experience — and act on it. This helps you keep improving and shows you value employee voice from day one.
